Over the years, Toomelah's problems mounted.

Illnesses from dirty drinking water, a lack of proper sanitation, overcrowding, and unemployment all took their toll, and in 1987 the residents rioted.

A special inquiry, under Justice Enfield, led to a number of changes.

The old shacks were torn down and replaced by brick houses; clean drinking water and a sanitation system were introduced; and schools such as this one were opened.
