Drug and alcohol abuse exacerbates the cultural identity gap between the old and young.
"I've seen kids down the Gold Coast chroming out in the open," says one resident, referring to the practice of sniffing solvents and aerosols.
"They don't do that here – not yet, thank God."
But it's creeping in. Just 8km away in Goondiwindi, where kids from Toomelah and Boggabilla attend high school, a box for discarding needles hangs in the toilets of a service station on the main street.
