In pictures: Life on a landless camp in Brazil
Cutting the wire

The MST organises occupations of land deemed fertile but idle land that the constitution says can be legally expropriated. In this gallery, we follow one occupation over five years.

The MST recruits most of its members in shanty towns. After weeks of preparation, they are driven in secret to the targeted plots.

In the dead of night, in what has become a symbolic act, the poor "cut the wire" around the land. At dawn the families are divided into "nucleos", to begin building the camp.
