In pictures: Civil rights clash at Selma
Freedom riders

Forty years ago the US civil rights movement reached its culmination in a march at Selma, Alabama.

Five years earlier, a small group of students launched a series of "Freedom Rides" to end segregation on interstate bus journeys.

The young freedom riders encountered hostility and violence from many residents, and little protection from police.

Their battle to end segregation in schools, public transport and restaurants across the South would soon escalate.
