In this picture, a prisoner tattoos a fellow inmate, who is yet to be sentenced, in the middle of the night at Pollsmoor Prison.

Tattooing is banned in prison, as it is an intricate part of rituals used by the notorious Numbers Gang, which has been present in South African prisons for over 100 years.

According to Mr Subotzky their powerful and violent rituals and myths still dominate prison life throughout the country.
