Deep in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, young people are being helped to discover skateboarding, reports journalist Gemma Pitcher.

In Isithumba village, skateboarders practice flips and jumps on a curved ramp in the crisp early morning, before they go to school.

They’ve got the swagger and self-confidence of any inner-city teenagers, but many have bare feet and their ramp is made from nailed-together pieces of plywood.
