Photo journal: Palm wine tapper

I was 13 when my dad first told me to climb a tree to collect wine.

I was very afraid, so my dad lit a fire underneath me at the bottom of the tree. I had no choice but to climb - quickly.

My son Issa is 19 but he hasn't learnt how to get wine. I'd like him to go far at school - unlike me - but I'd also like him to know how to collect palm wine.

It's a good trade if he can't find an office job.
