Margaret Gunde, 21, (left) dropped out of school seven years ago after her mother died of tuberculosis, to look after her three younger sisters. Her father was struck dead by lightning in 1994.

“When my mother knew she was going to die, she gave me advice on how to look after my siblings,” she says.

Margaret usually supports herself and her family by growing maize, peas and groundnuts, but this year her harvest failed and she has had to beg for food.
