With between two and four funerals to conduct each month, Sheikh Shokoma, head of the Muslim community in Njoho, says that an increasing number of villagers are seeking solace in prayer at his mosque.

“I teach that HIV/Aids is not a punishment from Allah, but something that we can change through our own behaviour and culture,” he says.

“Abstinence is the best protection but, if people can’t abstain, then they should use a condom.”
