Devastation

Tests conducted in Fougadougou in 1984 showed 100% of villagers over the age of 10 were afflicted.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, villagers fled Fougadougou in search of medical help or to beg in Mali's capital, Bamako.

The population dwindled from 400 to around 60 and houses and farmland were left to waste.
