Despite the heavy losses, US troops secured the Omaha beachhead by the end of D-Day, giving the Allies footholds along the entire stretch of coast.

But as they inched inland, they continued to encounter strong resistance.

Germans were killed or taken prisoner and shipped to England. But progress was slow and casualties high.
