The Longest Day

Winston Churchill called it "the most complicated and difficult" operation of World War II.

Operation Overlord was risky, and costly, but the success of the Allies' invasion of occupied France would be a major factor in deciding the outcome of the war.

The Allies knew they had to establish a second front in western Europe, if the Nazis were to be defeated.

As D-Day approached, millions of Allied troops gathered in southern England, waiting for the signal.
