In pictures: Broadband goes underground
Making life easier

Internet access has allowed the remote mine to communicate with the outside world.

While the miners still working there have little use for laptops, the employees above ground have found broadband a godsend.

Previously they had to rely on dial-up internet access which meant that the phone line was busy when members of the public rang the centre.

It was also costly because access was paid for on a per minute basis.
