Shadow of a massacre

The infamous massacre of Nellie - a village in the troubled north-eastern state of Assam - still haunts its inhabitants. Every election in the state is dominated by the issue of the 'outsiders' - the migrant Bengali farmers. A movement by the Assamese students to oust them led to a poll boycott call in 1983. But the migrant Bengalis voted. The local people responded by killing nearly 2000 Bengalis in one day. This time the voting in Nellie was peaceful, and the turn-out high.
