Photojournal: Living by a threatened forest

Here I am helping with a project to grow tree seedlings in a nursery at the fazenda - the big farm.

The situation is terrible with the forest, so much destruction. Someone needs to take more care of it.

Ibama, the Brazilian environment agency, just looks on from a long way away, they don't come here personally.

They demand that people in the settlements report anyone who abuses the forest, but we're not going to risk our lives. I don't want to end up with a rifle in my mouth.
