Photojournal: Living by a threatened forest

Angela Maria Borges dos Santos, 33, had nothing until the Brazilian government allocated her a plot of land. But her new home is on the edge of one of the world’s most threatened forests, the Murici reserve. She is trying to eke out a living without damaging it further.

This is the house where I live with my husband, seven children and granddaughter. I came here five years ago.

It took me four years to build the house. I could never finish it because I had no money.
