"Before Saddam's fall, adults were wary of me, fearful they might appear in print and be identified by remnants of the Baath party to exact some sadistic revenge.

"In the early days of the coalition's invasion or liberation 'Sura, sura!' was usually accompanied by a negative hand gesture or stern glance, an indication I shouldn't take images.

"For me the most noticeable expression of people's freedom came soon after Saddam's defeat, when 'Sura, sura' came to mean 'Take my picture!'"
