Hostage's stance

Over Christmas 1980 hostage Barry Rosen was allowed to read a message to his family on Iranian television.

He hit the headlines years later when he met one of the student ringleaders during the revolution, Abbas Abdi.

Mr Rosen urged the "people who squashed the human rights of those Americans" to say sorry and admit "if only to themselves, that it was unjustified".

But Mr Abdi insisted it had been a justifiable, non-violent protest that may have actually saved US lives.
