In pictures: The rat catchers

These civil servants hold the job of having to kill a nightly quota of 30 rats each.

Armed with a long stick in one hand and a torch in the other, they go out six nights a week to earn 240 rupees ($5.17) per night.

The Night Rat Killers start their work at around one in the morning when the rest of Bombay is fast asleep. This is when the rats come out to scavenge making it easier to kill them.

A few hours later the NRKs have generally killed their quota of 30.
