In pictures: Chechnya's bright side

In 2004, human rights activist Lida Yusupova received an Amnesty International award and was proclaimed the bravest woman in Europe.

She and other young women became “street commandants” during the bombing of Grozny.

They diligently visited neighbours between air raids to see if they were alive and whether they needed food or medicine.

She says she is haunted by the image of frightened children in a bomb shelter, and that is what motivates her.
