Peel was always ahead of the field - he gave Pulp their first session in 1981.

But it was another 13 years before everyone else caught on and they had chart success.

When he turned 60 in 1999, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker said: "He's as important as he's ever been."

His sentiments were echoed by Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt: "John is still playing adventurous music."
