The great trek

Luke Freeman, a London-based anthropologist, had always dreamed of driving cattle along the ancient drove paths of Madagascar.

After winning a travel bursary, he joined Vonjy and other cattle drovers on a trip across the Indian Ocean island’s western plains.

They trekked 300 miles to market across dry plains and dripping forests, along lonely tracks and national highways.
