Breeding alarm

Hoe in hand, a young Mauritanian, looks at a dense swarm of desert locusts near Aleg, Mauritania.

Heavy rains have nourished plenty of land cover and locusts are breeding at alarming levels in southern Mauritania and Senegal.

Many farmers have simply stopped sowing seeds because they fear locusts will consume their crop.

Aid workers warn that thousands of people will need food aid.
