Surface spray

Spraying pesticides on land infested with locusts using light aircraft is an effective way of dealing with an advanced outbreak.

Swarms can travel vast distances, covering up to 130km a day.

The FAO says that more than 1.7m hectares of locusts were treated in July in north-west Africa.

In total 6.5m hectares have been treated so far.
