Like all race-horses in Mali, this one is a stallion. Mares do not compete in Malian races.

"We have a very old culture of breeding horses," says Mamadou Konate, secretary general of the Bamako Equestrian League.

"The last Malian kings used horses in war but we've always used horses in social ceremonies and also to work in the fields."
