Horse-racing is the passion of many Malians.

On most Sundays in the capital, Bamako, the last hours before sunset see owners, trainers, enthusiasts gather at the hippodrome to watch locally bred horses compete.

The maximum weight for a jockey is 50 kg, so most jockeys are boys aged 12- 17 years old.

The winning rider in the main race wins the equivalent of $12 for himself.
