Islam and the state: Indonesia is the most populous Muslim nation. However, it has a secular constitution, and moderate Islamic groups oppose calls for Sharia law to be incorporated into state law.
Militant Islam: Several radical Islamic groups operate in Indonesia and are prepared to use violence. The best known of these, the Jemaah Islamiah, is believed to have links to al-Qaeda and has been blamed for the Bali bombing. Some of the groups are calling for an Islamic state in Indonesia, while others are campaigning for the imposition of Sharia law.
