Turkey: Turkey would be vital to any air campaign. About 4,000 air force personnel and some 60 aircraft – including some British Jaguar GR4 aircraft - are based in Turkey at Incirlik air base. This serves as the operation centre for patrols enforcing the 'no-fly zone' over northern Iraq.
The US also wants to position large numbers of ground forces in Turkey. They may be needed to secure the vast oilfields in the north of Iraq.
