The countryside remains a safer, more secure place than towns – but with some types of crime, the gap is narrowing.

Rural people are less at risk from violence and vehicle-related theft than those in towns.

But these categories make up a higher proportion of the countryside's overall crime.

Anti-social behaviour is becoming a growing menace, and fear of crime – now proportionately higher in rural areas than in towns – can in itself be damaging.
