Afghanistan has some of the world's worst health indicators, with an average life expectancy of 46 years - more than 15 years lower than in neighbouring countries.

One child in four does not survive beyond its fifth birthday. A large majority of women - particularly in rural areas - are never seen by a health professional during their pregnancy and childbirth.

Many health problems are caused by unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation.
