| Northern Ireland and Scotland - Alistair Carmichael
Elected MP for Orkney and Shetland in 2001, Alistair Carmichael swiftly became a Northern Ireland spokesman, staying with that brief until 2005 when he joined the Lib Dem home affairs team. He became transport spokesman after Sir Menzies Campbell's election as leader before returning to the Northern Ireland brief, with added responsibility for Scotland. Before becoming an MP, Mr Carmichael was a solicitor and a hotel manager. He has sat on the Scottish Affairs select committee and been a member of all-party groups, including ones on fishing, offshore oil and gas and telecommunications.
