Life inside

Detainees held in the high security conditions of Camp 5 face a restrictive regime in which every aspect of their lives is tightly controlled and monitored. The complex has state-of-the-art computer systems which control all air-conditioning, doors, showers and lights. Prisoners are segregated from other inmates and only allowed access to the small exercise yard for about one hour per day. All cells are monitored round the clock by CCTV and inmates are not allowed to leave them unless in handcuffs.

Life in the lower-security Camp 4 is somewhat easier. Detainees live in communal blocks with proper beds, private showers and toilets. They have access to writing materials and books, and can store personal items in their own lockers.

The camp also has a recreation room where detainees can play boardgames such as chess and draughts [checkers]. Prisoners are allowed access to outdoor exercise areas - some of which feature football and volleyball facilities - for up to nine hours per day.
