Depleted city

Tens of thousands of people were made homeless by Hurricane Katrina. In the months following the storm, some New Orleans parishes recorded a 60-90% population decrease.

Unofficial estimates suggest that the city's population stood at about 155,000 in March, and is likely to reach some 200,000 by September. This compares with pre-Katrina total of about 455,000.
