La Silla Paranal's telescopes are in remote locations

Deep in the wilderness of Chile's deserts are some of the world's most advanced telescopes.

Their remote locations minimise the chance of human interference, such as light pollution. Atmospheric conditions are also excellent, in what is one of the driest places on Earth.

The telescopes are run by the European Southern Observatory (Eso), which was joined by the UK in 2002. The intergovernmental body is based in Garching in Germany.

Eso is developing cutting-edge telescopes that will help transform our understanding of space.
