The inimitable Mr Jarvis Cocker
|
 |
1996
Winner: Pulp - Different Class
Sounds like: Indie rock for outcasts.
Key track: Mis-shapes - Jarvis Cocker's manifesto for nerds.
Subsequent career: The disco-infused Disco 2000 and the student anthem Common People rocketed Pulp into the premier league. But frontman Jarvis Cocker quickly became disillusioned with fame, and guitarist Russell Senior quit to spend more time with his family. The band is currently on hiatus.
Mercury barometer:High - Pulp were at the height of their creative powers.
Losers: Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go, Various - Warchild
