Suede's album heralded the britpop-era
|
 |
1993
Winner: Suede - Suede
Sounds like: Snarling, swaggering Britpop with a come-hither look in its eyes.
Key track: Animal Nitrate - a student disco anthem, which the band performed explosively at the 1993 Brit awards.
Subsequent career: Guitarist Bernard Butler quit while recording second album Dog Man Star. Lead singer Brett Anderson soldiered on with a new line-up. After 19 top 40 hits, the band split up in 2003.
Mercury barometer: High - This is one of the defining records of the Britpop era.
Losers: Stereo MCs - Connected, Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales
