Leakage
Water companies in England and Wales leak 3.6 billion litres of water a day - an average of 151 litres per property. There are huge variations from company to company. Thames Water leaks by far the most: 915 million litres per day - 261 litres per property. But London has some of the oldest water mains pipes in the country and a major replacement programme is under way to upgrade them. So far, the company says it has replaced 300 miles of Victorian water mains and hopes to have replaced 1,000 miles by 2010.
