The long hot summer of '76
The drought of the summer of 1976 stands out in the British collective memory.
Standpipes were introduced in several areas, and forest fires broke out as temperatures soared. The drought had a severe effect because it involved a prolonged period of low rainfall followed by day after day of very hot weather.
The heat set in on 23 June and for 14 consecutive days the temperature topped 32°C at a number of places in southern England. So far the conditions this year do not match those of 1976.
