Aquifer levels

Low rainfall over two consecutive winters has left groundwater levels depleted in southern England.

Even after the wettest May since 1979, three-quarters of aquifer indicator sites are still below the long term average.

The rainfall has helped replenish reservoir levels, however in a hot summer only the biggest reservoirs are able to meet demand without being topped up by rivers.

If the weather is hot and dry, rivers will themselves run low.

Groundwater can contribute to streams and rivers - known as base flow - but a combination of warm weather and low aquifer levels can lead to a shortage of river water.
