Mexico
Date: 2 July 2006
What was elected: President and congress
Term: 6 years
President-elect: Felipe Calderon
Situation: The election was so close that the electoral authorities took several days to review vote tallies before announcing that conservative candidate Felipe Calderon had a narrow lead of less than one percentage point over the left-wing candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Mr Lopez Obrador said he had evidence of irregularities and demanded a full recount. After reviewing some of the complaints and the results of a partial recount, the Electoral Tribunal ruled on 5 September that Mr Calderon had won the election and rejected allegations of fraud.
Mr Calderon took office on 1 December.
