Wales Secretary - Paul Murphy

Paul Murphy has become secretary of state for Wales in Gordon Brown's January 2008 cabinet reshuffle, replacing Peter Hain.

Mr Murphy has been MP for Torfaen, south Wales, since 1987 and has been Welsh secretary before, from 1999 to 2002.

Following that he was Northern Ireland secretary until 2005, before returning to Labour's back benches.

Born in 1948 and educated in Pontypool and at Oxford University, Mr Murphy has been a party member since he was 15.
