Transport Secretary - Ruth Kelly

Ruth Kelly, appointed transport secretary at the age of 39 in Gordon Brown's June 2007 reshuffle, had already built up plenty of Cabinet experience.

As education secretary from 2004 to 2006 under Tony Blair, she bore the brunt of the controversy over independent trust schools and the furore after it emerged sex offenders had been allowed to teach in schools.

Following this role, she was entrusted with the bulk of John Prescott's responsibilities at the now-defunct Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, and became communities and local government secretary.

A former economics reporter for The Guardian, she joined the Treasury in 2001 during her second term as an MP and has served on the Treasury select committee. She set a record by having four children while being a MP.
