Leader of the Lords - Baroness Ashton of Upholland

Baroness Ashton of Upholland is one of five women in Gordon Brown's first Cabinet, becoming Leader of the House of Lords in place of Baroness Amos at the age of 51.

Her move into the Cabinet came after two years as a minister in the Department for Constitutional Affairs.

The London University graduate was made a life peer in 1999 and was a parliamentary under secretary for early years and schools standards - and then Sure Start - at the Department for Education and Skills from 2001 to 2005.

She was educated at Upholland Grammar School and is married to the well-known political commentator and pollster Peter Kellner.
