Bulgaria and Romania finally join in January 2007.
The last vestige of the former Yugoslavia - a union of Serbia and Montenegro, formed in 2002 - split in 2006. The Serbian province of Kosovo, the scene of bitter conflict in 1998-99, also seems destined for independence.
All the former Yugoslav republics are at various stages on the road towards EU membership.
Croatia and Macedonia are already officially candidates.
