1994 -2004
By 1994, most of the former Communist countries of Central Europe have applied to join the European Union.

A decade later eight of them formally accede, along with Cyprus and Malta.

After a century which saw the collapse of empires and the fragmentation of Europe into dozens of small states, a new alliance is again being forged.

In terms of population, the EU is now the biggest single market in the world.
