In 1938-39 Germany annexes Austria and Sudetenland, and invades the Czech part of Czechoslovakia. Its invasion of Poland in September 1939 triggers World War II.
Under a deal with Germany, the USSR occupies eastern Poland and later annexes the Baltic states and northern Romania.
The USSR also gains part of Finland in 1940, while Germany occupies Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and part of France.
