Political events that shaped my life have been very negative - first the German occupation, then the Soviet. My father was a high-ranking civil servant and died in prison when I was 18. My husband spent four and a half years in Siberia. He was a promising piano player before but he lost his skills in those years and became a conductor instead. He died in 1994.
I am very happy to see the Soviet times go with Latvia regaining its independence, and now returning to Europe.
