Photo Journal: Guarding Poland's border
Map of the border

I commanded another checkpoint before I came to Terespol in January 2001. Since then the number of men under my command has more than doubled to 260.

I am now 35 years old. A lot of border guard officers are young, partly because we can retire after 15 years' service.

There has also been a major effort to crack down on corruption. Ten officers have been arrested at Terespol since 1999. Two are currently in court on bribery charges. If found guilty they will automatically be fired.
