Since 1 October Belarusians have needed to get a visa before crossing the border. In the first few days the numbers coming over dropped sharply, but now they are back to about 80% of the previous level.
The vast majority of people crossing the border are Belarusians on shopping trips.
They buy household goods – refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, microwaves and so on, and sometimes food. There are goods of some kind in practically every car when they go back.
