Photo Journal: Guarding Poland's border
Smuggler women

Every week we arrest several people for illegal trading. Mainly they bring in small quantities of cigarettes and vodka to sell in local markets, and may cross over several times a day. We call them "ant" smugglers.

They are difficult to control, because it is OK to bring in a few packets of cigarettes and a bottle of alcohol, if they are for personal use.

Sometimes we sweep the market in the nearby town of Biala Podlaska (pictured here). The culprits are mainly middle-aged or elderly women.
